Something I’ve come to learn is that a lot of people have had a bad toning experience. Today I want to help you know that it wasn’t the toner service. It was human error. When we learn about hair color as hairdressers we learn that you can only tone below or at the level the hair is at. Your hairs level is the color it lifts to. See the above image for some of the shades it might lift to!
When we tone we have to match to what level it has lifted to. Sometimes the correct level isn’t chosen. Do you see all those warm, red, and different blonde tones on that swatch?
Well a toner is meant to neutralize those tones and if the wrong level is chosen two things can happen:
- It can go way too dark.
- It won’t do anything and you will be left with a brassy/red unwanted tone.
If the correct level is chosen, you will love your tone because it will neutralize the unwanted tones and give you the best end result for your color.
Something you can do to make sure you love your toner is bring photos to your appointment. Bring some of colors you love and some of colors you don’t. That will help your stylist get clear vision of what you love.
