Shampoo & Conditioner… Why it matters

Shampoo & Conditioner… Why it matters

December 13, 2022

Here’s the thing, Hairdressers don’t sell you products so that they can make money. They sell it to you because they care. They care that your hair is dry. They care that your hair is breaking. They care that your hair has lost its shine.

Okay, so this is a topic that hairdressers feel so strongly about! We always do our best to help educate our guests on why shampoo & conditioner is so important for your hair. And just when we think you understand, you go home and use the Suave or Tresemme that’s in your shower, rinsing all our hard work down the drain.

I have tried to understand why.

Here’s the thing, Hairdressers don’t sell you products so that they can make money. They sell it to you because they care. They care that your hair is dry. They care that your hair is breaking. They care that your hair has lost its shine. I’m sure at this point you get it. Hairdressers want you to have the hair of your dreams and they know it is not possible with out the perfect products for your hair.

So lets explore this more…

Tresemme shampoo & conditioner is $6.99 at target.

The first ingredient is water, ok not so bad right? But the second one is Sodium Laureth Sulfate which is a detergent making your hair have bubbles and suds. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is known to cause redness and dryness. It is a great degreaser commonly used in cleaning chemicals. Yes it may get the oil and dirt out of your hair, but it then leaves behind a residue on the hair that is known to cause hair loss and loss of protein after continued exposure. Loss of protein equals breakage. Known issues reported to the FDA are eye irritations, tangled hair, excessive split ends, frizzy hair, and scalp irritations.

Third ingredient is Cocamidopropyl Betaine which is used to enhance bubbling also found in cleaning products. It helps bind to the dirt and oil so that when combined with water it washes it away. Fourth ingredient is Sodium Chloride, AKA salt which is used as a thickener. Known to cause dry and itchy scalp and a known cause of hair loss. If you ever get any deep conditioning treatments or keratin treatments, Sodium chloride rinses out those treatments. Fifth ingredient is Dimethiconol which is a non water-soluble silicone that creates a film on the outside of the hair to help the cuticle of the hair look smooth and produce less frizz. The issue with Dimethiconol is that the film it creates does not come off easy, blocking anything from leaving the hair shaft like dirt, and anything from entering into the hair like any products you may be using for the health of your hair. This effects hair color, cleanliness of the hair, and volume leaving it flat and lifeless.

There are also 23 other ingredients listed after the ones above. All of the above ingredients are not creating a great track record so lets cut to the chase here. The second ingredient causes hair loss & strips your hair of everything good and opens the cuticle. Third ingredient is found in cleaning products. Fourth ingredient is known to cause a dry, itchy scalp & hair loss. Fifth ingredient traps everything into your hair including dirt. Guys this is not good. This is just the breakdown of the shampoo.

So if you're still with me, let's talk about professional products. Yes they are more expensive, but they don’t contain low grade ingredients that will wash out your treatments and hair color. As a hair dresser the ingredient that is most concerning is the Dimethiconol because since it creates a film on your hair, that is going to make you have to wash it more. When you wash it more, you are exposed again to all those other chemicals more frequently. Then it also blocks any nutrients from getting into you hair, and your hair needs that to stay healthy.

Once your hair grows out of your head, it is dead. This is why shampoo & conditioner are responsible for 80% of your hairs over all health. Your hair can never be repaired to 100% so its important to make sure the products you put on your hair are effective. Not just what you would like to see come out of your wallet. If you have been using products that are not the best for your hair….. there is hope for you! Your hair does not have to feel like this forever.

Go see your Hairdresser. Let them recommend the right shampoo & conditioner for your hair.

It is important to know that your hair will have to go through a detox to get out all those bad ingredients before it can fully accept the good ones.

Be patient and know good things are coming to your hair!!
